Building construction has begun. The copper roof and the skylight have been installed.
Ceremonies for stupa consecration and land blessing. Project update below.
Background:
- Relics of Shamarpa, the 14th Shamar Rinpoche (1952-2014), have been placed in golden stupas in a few locations around the world. In the U.S., a golden stupa will be housed inside a reliquary stupa structure (called the "RSS" - photo gallery of the building design below) at the retreat center founded by Shamarpa in Natural Bridge, VA.
The progress to date on this project includes:
- Commissioning the fabrication of the reliquary stupa in France. The gold-leafing of the stupa was donated by the artist.
- Shipping the Golden Reliquary Stupa from France to the USA.
- Rolling mantras at multiple centers and preparing other items for filling the stupa, located in a temporary shrine room.
- Performing ceremonies for blessing the items to fill the stupa, consecrating the filled stupa and blessing the building site.
- Completing structural engineer and architectural designs for the building.
- Breaking ground at the site and pouring of concrete slab.
- Framing of the wood structure; and installing of copper roof, skylight, and windows.
Buddha Hill is landscaped, ready to be enjoyed when you come to visit!
- A site was chosen on the same hill ("Buddha Hill") as the timber-framed pavilion called the Buddha Shelter. A donor sponsored the clearing of the site, and another donor sponsored a beautiful path that was landscaped for visitors to enjoy the serene environment while strolling between the reliquary stupa site and the shelter.
Status of current fundraising for rest of the reliquary stupa structure ("RSS"):
- The reliquary stupa building will be about 1,000 sq. ft. of enclosed space when completed. We successfully met our prior matching campaign, and are currently raising $90,000 to repay a loan for the completion of the building.
